Health Care Without Harm (HCWH)
02/04/2009
Health Care Without Harm was first established in 1996 in the United States as a response to the discovery that medical waste incinerators were the source of 40% of dioxin pollution in the US. Today HCWH is an international coalition of over 443 groups in more than 52 countries working to protect health by reducing pollution in the health care industry. The cumulative effects of incorrect disposal of mercury-contaminated waste, either by being flushed down the drain, incinerated or disposed of as municipal waste, has led the WHO to identify the health care sector as a significant contributor of mercury pollution to the environment.
